The Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems (PISCES) was initiated in 2004 by the Japan-U.S. Science, Technology and Space Application Programs (JUSTSAP) to advance applications, research, and education in space exploration technologies and systems in close collaboration with the State of Hawaii. Hawaii has a long heritage with space exploration, including the training of Apollo astronauts and testing of lunar rover systems in some of the most lunar-and Martian-like sites available on Earth. This paper will explore two different business models to attract investment from multiple sources, including private and public funding for a space exploration project.PISCES' existing business model has been to use seed funding from the State of Hawaii to initiate this project, and to leverage this funding to attract paying users, such as NASA and other national and international space organizations. It is envisioned that the business model for PISCES may be expanded over time to include funding from additional sources, perhaps including entrepreneurs (Angels and financing firms), as well as corporations. The paper will also explore options for non-profit and for-profit opportunities that could coexist within the business model.
