A Bandwidth-Efficient Multicasting Approach for Wide Area Networks

Reverse path forwarding (RPF) is an efficient approach for distributing messages in wide area networks from the viewpoint of ease of its implementation. However, the main drawback of this approach is the generation of large number of duplicate packets resulting in poor bandwidth utilization. In this paper we propose a new and efficient way of multicasting which is a modification of the classical reverse path forwarding approach. The proposed method retains all the advantages of the RPF method while it has the important additional advantage of efficient utilization of bandwidth by reducing to a good extent the number of duplicate packets generated.
