Low temperature pre-combustion treatment of solid fuels including coal and biomass is a cost effective mechanism for decreasing power generation hazardous air pollutant emissions, conditioning carbon dioxide emissions for capture, and improving power generation system efficiency.Pre-combustion solid fuel treatment strategies also facilitate use of low grade solid fuels which are often available locally for reduced cost. In general, pre-combustion fuel treatment strategies are safer, faster, better, and less costly alternatives than "end-of-the-pipe" off-gas post-treatment solutions.The Reductive Thermal Processing (RTP) is a patented method of treating coal, biomass, and other solid materials continuously. Modular RTP systems are in now be installed throughout the US, China, India and other countries at both power generation sites, and fuel terminal and distribution sites. RTP systems reduce all known hazardous air pollutants including sulfur, nitrogen, chlorine, and volatile metals such as mercury, arsenic, and selenium.Commercial RTP systems focused on the pre-combustion treatment of coal are installed with state-of-the-art off-gas combustion chambers and high efficiency small footprint gas scrubbers for collecting the hazardous off gas components.The design, installation and performance of a pilot RTP system located in Hungary will be presented.
