Design of a new novel multi-stage gasification and incineration technology for medical waste was presented. An industrial 10 tons per day facility was built and proposed to be a demonstrative project of dioxin emission reduction from medical waste incineration. Two initial performance test runs were conducted to evaluate the dioxin reduction efficiencies before and after the implementation of Best Available Technology (BAT) and Best Environmental Practice (BEP) to the onsite facility. Experimental results in this facility demonstrated a great potential to reduce the dioxin emission from medical waste incineration by this novel multi-stage technology. The implementation of BAT and BEP also revealed the high difficulties of achieving low dioxin emissions from medical waste incineration process. Finally, future strategies for dioxin emission reduction from medical waste incineration in China are discussed.
