In this paper the geometric design of a circular plate Magnetorheological(MR)clutch is carried out.The equations for the torque transmitted by MR fluids and the gap between two circular plates are derived to provide the theoretical foundation for the selection of MR fluid materials used in clutches.The results show that with the increase of the applied magnetic field,the torque developed by MR fluid goes up rapidly.The gap between two parallel circular plates for a MR clutch can be calculated based on MR fluid properties,the desired control torque ratio,and the rotational velocity of the clutch.
