Polyacrylamide Reduces Erosion on Construction Site Slopes

Polyacrylamide (PAM) has been tested under a variety of conditions to improve erosion control on slopes typical on construction sites. How well it works in both reducing erosion and improving vegetation establishment has not always been clearly determined, however. In order to make some sense of these studies, this paper will summarize studies which have been conducted around the country and on construction sites in North Carolina. Many studies have been conducted on relatively gentle slopes (<5%), but the most vulnerable and common slopes on construction sites are much steeper. A review of the literature on slopes from 5 - 45%, and our own studies, suggests that at least 20 kg ha~(-1) is needed for reliable improvements in erosion control over mulch alone, with higher rates on steeper slopes. A mulch is necessary as the first approach to erosion control and vegetation establishment, but PAM will enhance its performance. All types of ground covers were improved to some degree with the addition of PAM. Mixing PAM into a solution prior to application will provide the best performance, which makes it uniquely suited to hydroseeding because the application of a liquid material is already being done. Data on the effects of PAM on grass establishment and growth is less clear but very little work has been done in this area.
