To date, the main measurement technologies include Total Station System (TPS), Global Positioning System (GPS), digital photogrammetry, and laser scanning/tracking. Many specialised applications (e.g. engineering, industrial, medical, etc) require precise dimensional measurement and three dimensional (3D) computer models of the real objects. The required precisions range from micron to cm. This paper describes some of the research works (at the Department of Geomatic Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)) related to precise non-contact measurement and 3D computer modeling of objects for medical and industrial applications, using laser scanning and close range digital photogrammetric measurement techniques. Several tests were performed, and some results were verified with Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), indicating precision of mm-level or better. The outcome from this research shows the practicality of the approach for many high precision applications.
