In the past years market requirements for medium lubricated or even dry running bearings have initiated advanced development of rolling bearings. Meanwhile there are solutions for applications in which the bearings in screw machines are operating in different environments (e.g. water, steam, liquid gas or refrigerant). To make that possible, the bearing geometry in the macro and micro area have to be adjusted for such requirements. Therefore, an optimized internal design is required which allows low operating friction under difficult conditions. To accommodate the different pressure viscosity properties of these media the development of surface finish manufacturing techniques to optimize structure parameters must be considered. Material selection for bearing rings, rolling elements and cages are also optimized for the applications. The worst case of such applications is the operation of bearings without lubrication, for example in screw machines for vacuum applications. Also for such conditions basic knowledge exists. The transformation of this knowledge to industrial applications is in progress.
