While the BIPV sector has been growing steadily, the PV module product offered to architects and builders has changed little being conventional square cells of matt black appearance in a rectangular module package. In an FP5 project "BIMODE" a range of coloured cells in different colours and module shapes was developed. In this paper the impact of cell colour on cell efficiency and the possibility of mismatch between series connected cells of different colours is discussed. Three main prototypes in triangular, hexagonal and rectangular were developed. The enhanced visual appeal for a number of building types from car parks to homes is will be illustrated. Further development of the coloured cell concept is now taking place in the DTI Technology Programme project HAVEMOR.
