NHK is converting to tapeless broadcasting with theaim of configuring a new broadcasting system.Recently, NHK has developed and installed a highperformance, HD (high definition) news productionand broadcasting system (HD server system) linkingmultiple video servers at the BSNC (BroadcastingSatellite News Center) for satellite channels. This is atotal system that enables recording, editing, andplaying out, and features HD nonlinear editors withpowerful video effects, and SD (standard definition)nonlinear editors (proxy editors) for quick editing.By combining an additional standard-resolutionserver and a low-resolution server for PC previews,NHK was able to create a server system morecompact than an HD server alone. The system is alsoclosely linked to NHK's NDACS 1 (News DataAcquisition and Control System), which is the mainsystem for news. The system has such highlycooperative functions with NDACS as an automaticrecording function based on the NDACS scheduleand a script link function that can play out editedfootage just by affixing a thumbnail to the e-script2.This system is capable of creating an extremelyefficient and stable workflow for broadcasting byclosely linking the meta-data3 stored on the NDACSto the server footage.
