Computers are used to process and store data in electronic format. Data is stored differently between different operative systems. One of the major concerns is the efficiency which the stored data can be accessed, and how to reduce the access time. Data is stored on the disk on many different ways; for example, data structures like trees, directories and various searches. In this paper we will examine four operative systems - Unix, Linux Windows and Mac OS X - and identity the methods used to store and retrieve the data.
