This paper proposes a shear-mode rotary MR (magneto- rheological fluid) damper designed for unlimited rotating arm of mobile robot. For a performance analysis of the shear-mode rotary MR damper, magneto-static analysis is performed by applying current from 0 to 3 A on model. Also in order to perform mechanical performance test, we constructed a test bench using AC servo motor, servo motor driver and controller, gear box, torque transducer, and MR damper. And laboratory tests were performed to study the characteristics of the prototype shear-mode rotary MR damper.
