Telematics is once again gaining traction. Thilo Koslowski of Gartner Research projects that by 2012, the majority of all new vehicles will be telematics enabled - but how do stakeholders best provide telematics services to the consumer while maximizing revenue? Wireless communications (Cellular, DSRC and Wi-Fi) are becoming standard in ?In-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communications are being promoted by the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) Initiative; ?Automakers will be enablers and partners for telematics services; ?Consumers are accustomed to carriers as their wireless providers. Deployment of embedded solutions is measured by automobile model years, so technology quickly outpaces automotive rollouts. So how can quick-to-market telematics services be provided? One way, which this paper explores, is to use wireless communications in conjunction with a vehicle's existing communications system.
