VII CALIFORNIA: UPDATE, PROGRESS AND ROADWAY APPLICATIONS

This paper describes the present state of Vehicle-infrastructure integration (VII) in California. What is VII? Cars talking to and listening to the roadside - right now (as in real time for safety critical applications), right here (at selected WiFi-like hotspots, and right everywhere (as in the US, perhaps over 200,000 VII tranceivers, listing and talking in bits and bytes) and at the right frequency (75 MHz of FCC-provided free, unlicensed bandwidth near 5.9 GHz). What is VII California? The VII California testbed and proof of concept development in Northern California. The public sector, academia and automobile laboratories are partnering do develop infrastructure (roadside unit) implementation and vehicle-infrastructure messaging and communication of the VII data, in addition to backhaul communications and collection, processing and archiving of data at the center. Applications experiments that realize VII in California are being developed.
