As the complex nature of biological process, It is generally recognized that expert control system (ECS) can cope with the problems in biological process more efficiently than routine control system. The work of this paper is to discuss the application of a distributed expert system (ES) in a wastewater treatment technology-BCFS process. An integrated and distributed ES is developed which supervises the control system of the process. The system has the capability to learn from the correct or wrong solutions given to previous cases. The structure of the suggested ECS is analyzed, which permits on-line implement of every operating strategy of the experimental system. It proves that the efficiency of removed nitrogen and phosphorus can be increased compared with the usual operating conditions. Our experiments have shown that the water quality can not only meet the national standard,but also optimize the performance of the system. And these achievements are achieved with less energy cost because the performance of the system is optimized using operating rules implemented in real time.
