Quick Checking with Desk Digitizer for Automotive Clay and 3-D Reverse Modelling

With the Immersion MicroScribe-3DTM desk digitizer and the WACOM intuosTM intelligent graphics tablet system, a quick checking method is presented here for both the clay modelling and the reverse 3-D modelling in the automotive styling. The method can assist the stylists quickly to check out the under-constructed clay model if there is a 3-D model in computer, which is different from the traditional clay modelling method to use the printed elevation views, scales and rulers to check out the precision of clay model. Similarly, it can also assist the reverse engineers quickly to find out the difference between the clay model and the 3-D model to refine the 3-D model further when the clay model is ready. The test indicates that the differences and precision between the clay model and 3-D model can be easily found out and controlled once the reference marks fixed. Therefore, such a method can be applied effectively to speed up the clay model construction or the 3-D reverse modelling in automotive engineering.
