Problems concerning dry barrier mix (DBM) behavior taking into account autopsy results in aluminum reduction cell are discussed. Analyses of the properties changes due to aggressive components attack are given. The mechanism for the reactions are proposed.Penetration height and composition changes in the cases of industrial and lab scale cells are presented. It is shown that DBM samples taken from the cell with service life of 9 months has three layers structure. Chemical changes of the initial composition across these layers are determined.Gas-phase reactions in barrier mix with formation of intermetallic compound have been established. The description of the possible reaction mechanisms is offered.
