In the recent years the City of Yellowknife has experienced tremendous growth, and is the most populated area in all the three northern territories of Canada. This growth has resulted in expanding the City with the construction of new subdivisions. The new subdivision is the Niven Lake subdivision that is created by making an amendment in the zoning bylaw. In order to provide potable water to the new residents of this subdivision the City decided to supply the water from Pumphouse 1. However, the Pumphouse 1 was designed to serve a certain portion of the City. With the current pumping arrangement it was not possible to provide the water to the new residents with adequate pressure. The City, therefore, decided to install a booster pump station. In order to appropriately design the booster station with no effect on existing water distribution system, a water distribution model was developed. This model resulted in predicting the size of pumps for various water demand scenarios as well as the number of pumps required for this purpose. Also, the model helped in optimizing the performance of existing pumps at Pumphouse 1. This paper is therefore aimed to provide the results of this project that helped the City of Yellowknife to economically design a booster pump station.
