Natural Oil Polyols As Co-polyols In Automotive Headrest, Armrest, RIM and NVH Applications

The Dow Chemical Company has introduced a NOP (Natural Oil Polyol) that can be used in polyurethane foamand elastomer formulations. In the initial phase of the development of this novel technology, slab applications weresuccessfully targeted by The Dow Chemical Company as presented in previous API conferences1. In addition, a marketdevelopment plant for production of the polyol was announced in 2006 demonstrating the commitment to scale up thetechnology.This paper gives an overview of the continuing development of NOP derived polyurethane materials for a varietyof automotive applications. Although there are many applications possible, the applications of headrests, armrests, NVH(noise and vibration harshness) and RIM (reaction injection molding) will be highlighted. The comparison of NOP versusstandard systems and materials will demonstrate that natural oil polyols can be utilized in these applications.
