The use of zinc oxide as an activator in Hydrin~R /ECO terpolymer compounds is known to cause poor hot air oven aging results. Given this, zinc oxide has not been recommended for compounds where the application is expected to see service temperatures at or near 125°C. Calcium oxide is known to have excellent aging properties but does not activate as quickly as zinc oxide. This paper examines probable degradation mechanisms and explores comparisons between zinc and calcium oxide activators within sulfur and peroxide cure systems. Several zinc complex materials are evaluated as well. Analysis is made of physical property responses after hot air oven aging and an improved metal oxide system for epichlorohydrin terpolymer compounds is identified.
