Fossil fuel has been the major resource for the rapid advance of mankind over the last century. However, recent studies on greenhouse effect clearly demonstrate the urgent need to find an alternative form of base load supply for electricity generation. Though the use of ocean energies to produce electricity was suggested in the early 20 century, it was only late 1960's when the official decree authorized the EDF, Electricite De France to begin building the first large scale commercial tidal hydropower project, the Rance Tidal Power Plant after the very long effort to find the technical solutions. Tides are generated by the sun, moon and earth combination. They are always there and neither pollutes or has foreseeable life, even the world turning its eyes on this for its future energy source. The principle of the tidal motion is illustrated in Figure 1. The diagram shows how the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun affect the tides on earth. The magnitude of this attraction depends on the mass of the object and its distance away. The moon has the greater effect on earth despite having less mass than the sun because it is so much closer.
