In spite of significant efforts made in the past, the industry is still not able to produce flame-resistant nylon fabrics. Flame-resistant nylon can be produced by copolymerization using phosphorus-containing diamine monomers, but such technical approach has not achieved commercial success. Adding flame retardant additives to nylon polymer during fiber spinning is another way to impart flame retardancy to nylon fibers, but this method also encountered major obstacles including polymer degradation during fiber spinning and changes in fiber properties due to high add-on levels of additives.
