Creep Behavior of TIMETAL ~R1100 at Elevated Temperatures and Its Automotive Applications

Timetal ~R1100 (Ti-6Al-2.7Sn-4Zr-0.5Mo-0.45Si) was developed to maximize creep resistance with adequate strength and fatigue performance in aircraft jet engine applications. The combination of weight saving and the excellent high temperature properties has opened an opportunity for the application of this alloy as exhaust valves for automotive and motorcycle engines. The service temperature for the alloy in this application appears to be much higher than the 1100°F (600°C) for which the alloy was originally designed. The present paper will introduce the application of TIMETAL ~R1100 for automotive engine valves and discuss the creep behavior up to 760°C or 1400°F.
