Vietnam gas industry has enjoyed relatively fast growth in the past ten years. However it continues to be in an infancy stage of development, in the context where proven and discovered reserves still remain very small compared to speculated potentials. Such situation does require a set of gas policies, encouraging both up and downstream activities, to be in place. Among those policies, the market development may be a driving factor.It appears that, in the long run, expansion of the gas use in power sector does not represent any major problem, as the other resources (including hydro and coal) are not much abundant. But in the near future, competition with hydro and coal may not be easy, especially in the North. The use of gas as fuel in the industrial sector and transportion is gradually increasing. Domestic urea production using gas is a keen interest of the Government as a necessary support to agriculture and as one of the measures enhancing food supply security. Investment opportunities are opened in whole gas chain and Petrovietnam is asked by the Government to play a leading role in mid and downstream activities.
