The Future of High Speed and Variable Track Gauge Trains

With the deregulation of railway transport, the incorporation of new countries into the EuropeanCommunity and the new emerging economies, the future of the railway looks promising.However, these new market niches are bringing with them new demands that are going to requirea qualitative leap forward in the rail industry.New totally interoperable variable gauge trains with performances and safety levels that areequivalent to those of high speed trains are going to be required.This paper presents the project AVI 2015 led by CAF, whose key objective is to developsustainable technologies that will lead to totally interoperable high-speed trains capable oftravelling at the maximum speed compatible with the infrastructure of each particular area with noreduction in safety whilst showing a respect for the environment.
