Dispersions of nano-sized (10-100 nm) particles inwater or other base fluid are known as nanofluids. Recentlow-pressure pool-boiling studies[1,2] show that water-basednanofluids with small concentrations (<0.001% vol.) ofalumina nanoparticles can have critical heat flux (CHF)increases up to 200%. While not directly applicable to anuclear reactor situation, these findings are remarkable, andcall for a serious investigation of water-based nanofluids aspotential coolants for PWRs*.
