The production of hydrogen by photocatalytic decomposition of water using nitrogen-doped Ta_2O_5 catalyst was studied. Nitrogen-doped Ta_2O_5 catalyst was prepared by the direct nitridation of tantalum pentoxide and characterized by some analytical methods. The photocatalytic activities of the catalysts were ascertained by the production of hydrogen in an aqueous ethanol solution illuminated with high-pressure mercury lamp. The efficiency of hydrogen evolution for the nitrogen-doped Ta_2O_5 catalysts can be improved by loading ruthenium and the catalyst loaded with 0.1 wt.% Ru shows the highest photocatalytic activity.
