The authors propose a rational approach for the calculation of the reduced strength of steeltension members due to shear lag effects based on an assumed distribution of forces along inclined linesin the member ends, somewhat similar to the Whitmore's concept used with gusset plates for bracingmembers. The workings of the method are established for a basic weld in shear at both elastic and plasticstress levels. The method is compared to the recommendations contained in CSA Standard S16-01 forelements connected by a single longitudinal weld and elements connected by longitudinal welds along twoparallel edges. The predicted strength of double angle members with welded connections is compared toresults from laboratory tests done by the authors. The proposed method could be used for calculating thereduced strength due to shear lag effects of tension members with different shapes and with either weldedor bolted connections.
