Recent repeated earthquakes in different parts of Chittagong have generated a potentialthreat and caused deep concern with regards to seismic hazards and resulting risk among the people ofthat locality. Chittagong is now considered as a serious earthquake prone zone where a major earthquakemay occur at any time. Its rapid urban growth is causing further deterioration and increasing thevulnerability of human lives, economy and infrastructures. When such natural hazard will hit this largemetropolitan city, it may create catastrophe in Chittagong, and the whole country may suffer. One of ourmajor challenges is to reduce the vulnerability to this uncontrollable and unpredicted hazard by havinggreater understanding about its causes and effects. At the same time, it is very much essential to developan effective earthquake risk management plan, which requires long-term plan of action and involvesmultidisciplinary contribution. This paper tries to give some ideas about the potential threat and impact ofhazards due to earthquake and the risks associated with it and thereby reduce the impacts through propermitigation measures.
