The design of a package for the transport or storage of radioactive materials is essentially asimple and logical process, but the nature of the content and the high public awareness ofsafety issues means the demonstration of design must be both rigorous and extensive. Theregulation of the nuclear industry is second to none, and requirements are laid down in theIAEA Transport Regulations which have a major influence in package design and analysisrequirements. In particular, the Transport Regulations require certain tests to be carried out toensure the safety of the package. This paper discusses the tests undertaken in the design of apackage for the transport of radioactive materials, and the influence of the design processes onthe test requirements.
