As an economically challenged country, Bangladesh, still has limited amount of transport ofradioactive materials and their wastes which are, of course, increasing steadily. BangladeshAtomic Energy Commission (BAEC), by Nuclear Safety and Radiation Control (NSRC) Act(1993), has been conferred all necessary powers for regulatory control of all kinds oftransportation of radioactive material, nuclear material or any prescribed substance and theirwaste. Accordingly, on that legal basis, adequate provisions have been incorporated in theNSRC rules (1997) to comply with IAEA transport regulations. As national guides fortransportation of radioactive materials and their wastes are still underway, BAEC has adoptedapplicable IAEA standards, codes and guides set forth in this regard. Certain methodologieshave been established for controlling the transport of radioactive materials in the countrydepending on the nature and practice of organizations using and transporting them. Mainly, category III-YELLOW packages of radioactive materials are transported in Bangladesh.Types of packages of radioactive materials associated with different conditions of transportare few. Close monitoring of regulations for safe transport of radioactive materials is beingaccomplished through inspection, supervision, training as well as providing licenses for thispurpose. So far no reportable incident has occurred in the country in respect of transportationof radioactive materials. BAEC has established full control over all kinds of transport ofradioactive materials and their wastes.
