Much attention is still being paid to styrene-butadiene rubbers (SBRs) for tire tread compounds because they are one of the most important materials for improving both dry and wet grip and for the energy saving. In order to explore suitable structures of chain-functionalized-copolymers for the use as silica-filled tires, new six types of dimethylamino-chain-functionalized model copolymers of SBR were successfully synthesized. These polymers include ω- and ω, ω'-chain-end-functionalized copolymers with one and two dimethylamino groups, α,ω- and α, ω,ω'-chain-functionalized copolymers with two and three dimethylamino groups, and α,ω-chain-functionalized polymers with two dimethylamino groups and a specially designed-chain-functionalized copolymer with three dimethylamino groups, the latter two copolymers of which were synthesized by a promising new one-pot methodology. Finally, they were mechanically mixed with silica and other agents to produce silica-filled vulcanized rubbers. The physical properties of these rubbers, such as the rolling resistance by resilience at 60°C and the dynamic property by tanδ at 70°C those are known as the indicator of the energy savings were studied.
