Steel plates used in shipbuilding are generallyprotected from corrosion by painting. However, whenthe plates are welded or cut, any paint near the processis vaporized, and has to be reapplied. In this study, atechnique was developed that combines applying aprotective corrosion resistant layer via laser claddingtogether with painting in a single process. By doingthis, it is only necessary to go back over a weld withone pass to provide enhanced corrosion protection.
