Delineation of Aquifer Geometry in Sukinda Chromite Deposit Valley through Geophysical and Hydrogeological Investigation

The Chromite deposits in Cuttack district, popularly known as Sukinda Chromite, are located near the tri-junction of Cuttack, Dhankanol and Keonjar districts, Orissa. It is a famous Chromite deposits of ultramafic complex. It belongs to metamorphosed rocks of Pre-Cambrian age. The rocks in the area are associated with six sedimentary sequences and each is separated by unconfirmities. Sand/weathered formations of dunite, peridotite and pyroxenite form the aquifer in the area. During the mining process, the dump of ore bodies might cause groundwater pollution. In order to assess the groundwater pollution, it is essential to delineate aquifer geometry. Geophysical and Hydrogeological investigation were carried out to decipher the aquifer geometry and its extent to know the groundwater pollution due to mining. Twenty seven electrical resistivity soundings with half current electrode separation of 100 m. were carried out in the area and well inventory of twenty two borewell/dugwell were obtained. The sub-surface layer parameters (water bearing formation) obtained from sounding interpretation has been used to delineate aquifer thickness and extent in the area.
