If the components of a system can enter a passive state, the methods for calculating the system availability based on the Boolean theory can no longer be applied. A Monte Carlo simulation algorithm was developed to evaluate the effects of passive states on the availability of mechanical systems. The influence of different system structures has been determined. For mechanical series systems, the influence of the number of components and their inherent availability on the system availability has been determined. The results can be used for system design layout, spare parts strategy, and process planning.
