In the last five years many infrastructure works in the Netherlands have been contracted out using a design & construct delivery system. The innovative aspect of the procedure and the increased value of the contract packages lead to a changed risk profile for both owners and contractors. Explicit risk management became an important instrument in assessing, managing and allocating project risks. Based on the authors experiences as consultants on both sides of the table, some "lessons learned" are defined and improved methodology is recommended in order to enhance the cost efficiency and benefits of risk management.
