A Comparative Study of the Performance of Augered Cast in Place Piles and Drilled Displacement Piles in a Coastal Plain Setting

Angered cast in place piles (ACIP) have found wide use, particularly where noise and vibration are of concern. Within the past few years, a modified version of this foundation type, designated a drilled displacement pile (DDP) has been introduced. With the DDP system, cuttings are displaced laterally into the supporting soils, resulting in densification of the soil and increased side shear resistance. In this paper, a case history is presented wherein both ACIP and DDP piles were installed in an interbedded sand/clay profile. A series of instrumented load tests were conducted yielding information on the load transfer properties of each pile type. The results of these tests were used to compare the load-carrying capacity of the two systems and the relative side shear capacity developed. The results of these tests illustrate a significant increase in the load carrying capacity of DDP piles over conventional A CIP piles in loose alluvial soils.
