Wetting-drying cycles are common in field and it is important for proper geotechnical design to take account of soil behavior under such conditions. In this paper, results are presented from an experimental investigation aimed at understanding the behavior of an unsaturated soil during wetting-drying cycles with measurements of both the overall volume change of the sample and the change in the volume of voter in the sample. Furthermore, influence of wetting-drying cycle on subsequent loading behavior is explored. Appropriate test details are included to facilitate the discussion of experimental results. A brief discussion is included about the implications of these results for the development of elasto-plastic constitutive models for unsaturated soils, especially with reference to hydraulic hysteresis.
