Soil boring logs and well data are compiled in a GIS database and model of the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts (USA). The use of, GeoStatistical Analyst?and Spatial Analyst?extensions of ArcGIS? GIS allows this model to bring together years of geotechnical information that has until now only been examined on a project specific basis. This stratigraphic and hydrogeologic model will serve to provide a better overall view of subsurface geology, groundwater levels, bedrock elevations, geotechnical soil properties of the various soil layers found throughout the town. Inquirers interested in a specific town parcel will be able to query for soil, bedrock and groundwater conditions in specific and broad geographic locations. Stratigraphic layers can be plotted and interpolated across the entire study area to allow for a broad based general overview of the regional subsurface stratigraphy. Soil properties obtained from boring logs can be compared and analyzed for many construction applications. Ground water levels and monitoring well data can be entered and plotted in the model allowing for hydrogeologic studies and possible water chemistry and pollution modeling. Using geostatistical interpolation, and a graphical user interface (GUI) query system, synthetic boring logs, and site-specific/parcel-specific profiles can be produced. Ground water data for nearby wells can be presented using the query system. This is coordinated with the town GIS database for parcels, utilities and land use.
