Environmentally friendly remediation of oil spills from ice-infested waters is a major concernof the petroleum community where frigid temperatures can impede clean-up. Fish scale powder isproposed as an environmentally sound and economically viable remediation option to solve this problem.A series of experiments was conducted to determine if fish-scale powder can be used as a remediationmedium. The results from this experiment have been compared with experimental results of theconventional remediation medium, bentonite. Fish-scale is found to absorb oil spill and form fineemulsions that would be easier for microbes to biodegrade. Another aspect is the possibility of re-usingthe oil-fish scale media for other applications, such as drilling mud. The results obtained are competitiveand indicate that the powder can be an alternate medium in remediation technology. This can lead to asignificant amount of savings for the clean up of oil spills. Further applications of fish scale will bediscussed.
