WEB BASED INTEGRATION OF PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (PMS) AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used as a prospect of enhancing PavementManagement Systems (PMS). By using a graphical interface that allows the data to be displayed in a mapform and analyzing the information spatially give numerous arrays of benefits in the process of decisionmaking in PMS. First step is going to be the investigation of possible PMS activities that will benefit fromGIS, such as cracking problems, roughness, deflection, smoothness and distress of pavements. Thesecond step is the implementation of PMS and GIS integration. The benefits of this integration are goingto be the easy access to wide variety of data, visual manipulation, spatial analysis, and graphicalpresentation. To further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of GIS-PMS integration, potential Internetand Intranet applications is going to be examined. The benefits of web based GIS-PMS integration isgoing to be summarized and a sample application is going to be implemented. The savings in monetaryterms by using such applications is very huge and the decision making process is very quick.
