Finding and Analysis of The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Associated Antibodies against the Human Lung Tissues in Sera from SARS Patients

Background Recently, a mystery and deadly infectious aliment - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in human beings are outbreak and rapidly spread in worldwide. A novel contagious coronavirus responsible for the SARS has been found and confirmed. Methods The clinical specimens were from SARS patients in china mainland, and were analyzed by using a hand - made indirect enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results A group of special antibodies reacting with the human lung tissues were found in the sera from the SARS patients. The results show that the positive rate was 93.75% in sera from 32 SARS patients and 11.43% in 105 health blood donors respectively . It was found that these antibodies were positive in 1 - 7 days in most cases after onset. A panel of known autoantibodies were also analyzed. And no positive results were found. Conclusion Our data show that these antibodies appeared in sera from most of the SARS patients and were called SARS Associated Antibodies temporarily in this paper. It may play an important role during the development of pathology in SARS. It is possible that production of these antibodies is a kind of autoimmun response during the SARS virus infection.
