UTILIZATION OF CONVERTER SLAG AS A CONCRETE ADMIXTURE

Converter slag, like blast- furnace slag, is an industrial by product of the steel manufacturing process, but unlike blast- furnace slag that can be used effectively as a concrete admixture, it has not been used effectively due to the expansive property of free lime and oxidized iron in it. The authors discovered that stable qualities can be obtained by incinerating converter slag at a low temperature, immersing it in an alkaline solution and then pulverizing it. After processing it to 75 μm or less, mortar and concrete were produced by replacing 30 to 70% of normal Portland cement with the experimental converter slag powder. The expansion was subsided by an age of 91 days associated with sufficient long- term strength development. The rate of hydration and adiabatic temperature rise were reduced.
