FULL SCALE TRIALS USING INCINERATOR BOTTOM ASH IN CEMENT BASED PRODUCTS

One of the disposal routes for municipal waste is incineration. Although the incineration of municipal solid waste can reduce the volume of waste by approximately 70%, there is still the need to dispose of the residues to landfill. The introduction of the European Landfill Directive in June 1999 operating sites in the UK have been set national targets to reduce the amount of waste disposed of in this manner. The paper investigates the potential for carrying out full-scale demonstrations using incinerator bottom ash (IBA) as a replacement for natural aggregate in both ready mix concrete and precast concrete units. It was found that when IBA was used in ready mix concrete the fresh and engineering properties complied with that of a C20 concrete, although problems with workability were experienced. Precast concrete units manufactured using IBA achieved compressive strengths equal or above control specimens. Although the chloride and sulfate contents, of IBA, limits its use in structural concrete, other applications are viable.
