With the increasing need to recycle industrial by-products and protect the environment, there is a growing emphasis to provide technical data about the performance of concrete and mortars containing cement by-pass dust (CBPD). This study investigated the beneficial reuse of CBPD as a cementitious material. CBPD, also known as cement kiln dust, was added to concrete and mortar mixtures to study its effect on concrete properties including the compressive strength, flexural strength, toughness and absorption characteristics. Different mixes with several water-to-cement ratios were prepared using 0 to 30 percent CBPD replacement of cement and sand. It was found that substitution of cement with CBPD does not lead to any strength gain. However, small additions of up to 10 % CBPD does not seem to have a significant adverse effect on strength, especially at low water-to-cement ratios.
