More and more fiber handling and craft activities are expected in optical fiber networks. These activities can cause transient optical attenuation losses in active fiber circuits, which could lead to an increase in transmission errors or bit errors. This paper will give a performance criterion and a test method for the selection of network elements that can reduce these transient optical losses to a non-service-affecting level in STM-64 or OC-192 transmission lines.
