A fluorescent oxygen sensor has been developed that can be applied to an adhesive label for attachment to the insideor outside of food and beverage packaging. The oxygen sensor film is then analyzed with a handheld spectrometerto assist in shelf-life determination and assessment of packaging integrity. There are many complicating issues forimplementing such a sensor directly into packaging. These include the development of the sensor films and their lotto-lot reproducibility, the spectrometer configuration for optimum sensitivity, and a calibration algorithm andprocedure for quantitative oxygen analysis. These issues will be described in detail and their solutions discussed.
