In this paper an optimal control approach to robust controller design for load-frequency control is proposed. The main aim is to design a state-feedback controller to stabilize the power system under uncertainty. The adopted design translates the robust control problem into an optimal control problem. The solution to the optimal control problem is a solution to the robust control problem if a certain matching condition is satisfied. The optimal control problem in the power system case may be solved using the Riccati equation. This leads to a simple solution process. Simulation results showed that the proposed approach is effective either in the case of single area or multiple area power systems. Moreover the proposed approach gave better results compared with alternative approaches. By proper choice of the design parameters, the values of settling time, and overshoot may be adjusted.
