Over the last three decades occlusive dressings have brought revolutionary changes to world of wound management. The most important benefit of these dressings is the creation of a moist wound environment which promotes and accelerates the wound healing process. The most important example of the moist healing dressings is that of calcium/sodium alginate. This paper reports our work of chemical modification of cotton gauze, bandages, and lap sponges that would absorb unusually high amounts of body fluid which would be similar to alginate dressings without significantly altering the shape of the starting rolls. Existing bandage rolls will be made into highly absorbent bandage rolls, thus eliminating the need for any subsequent converting operation. Chemical modification by carboxymethylation was carried out by treating cotton gauze or nonwoven rolls with caustic soda and monochloroacetic acid in 80/20 ethanol/water media. Post treatment of Na-CM-cotton rolls in 80/20 ethanol/water via partial ion exchange, with calcium chloride resulted in Ca/Na-CM-cotton gauze rolls. Calcium/sodium-CM-cotton may cost less than, and be competitive with alginate dressings. Post treatment of Ca/Na-CM-cotton gauze rolls (in ethanol/water) with silver sulfadiazine (SSD), or SSD blended with chlorohexidine diacetate (CHD), or silver nitrate resulted in antimicrobial products.
