Enhanced bicomponent meltblown studies were carried out at TANDEC, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Polyesters, polyolefins and polyimides mono and bico meltblown webs have been produced by using Reicofil Bi-Component Meltblown Line. Thermal and flow properties of the polymers were examined using DSC (differential scanning calorimeter) and Melt Indexer for an effective experimental design. The meltblown processability and compatibility of the polymers in a wide range of operating windows were extensively investigated. Die geometry, melt temperature, melt throughput, air temperature, air flow rate and DCD (Distance of Collector to Die) were considered as process control variables. The produced webs were post treated for possible fiber splitting. The properties of the webs after treatment were characterized for fiber diameter, bulk density, air permeability, hydrostatic head, and tensile properties. Splitted fibers were observed in the bico meltblown webs by SEM (Scanning Electrical Microscope).
